Denim Fabric for Jeans

Denim Fabric for Jeans

Choosing denim for a five-pocket programme: weight, stretch, width and what to check before you cut.

241 matching fabrics in stock, 368,900+ yards available today.

Weight

Most jean programmes land between 11 and 14oz. Under 11oz reads as a fashion jean and sews quickly; 12oz is the workhorse; 14oz and up is heritage territory that costs more to sew and needs pattern allowances at the seam intersections.

Stretch or rigid

Fitted and skinny fits are almost always stretch, typically 98/2 or 99/1. Straight and relaxed fits are usually rigid — stretch in a loose leg tends to bag at the knee and seat.

Width and yield

Denim widths in our inventory run from about 31 to 66 inches depending on the mill. Width drives yield, so a fabric that looks cheaper per yard can be more expensive per garment. Work the marker before comparing prices.

What to check on the swatch

Shrinkage if it is not sanforized, recovery if it is stretch, twill direction, and how the shade reads under your wash. Ask for enough yardage to wash a sample rather than judging dry.
