Why 12 oz is the default jean weight
Eleven to thirteen ounce denim is where most five-pocket production sits, and has been for decades. It is substantial enough to hold a crease and take a wash programme, but still sews at a sensible rate and does not fight the machine at the felled seams.
Two 12oz fabrics can feel completely different. Ounce weight measures mass per square yard; it says nothing about yarn count, twill construction, finish or hand. A 12oz open-end ring denim and a 12oz slub can cost and behave very differently, which is why a swatch matters more than the number.
Typical uses
Classic and fashion jeans in both rigid and stretch, trucker jackets, skirts. It is one of the three big bands in our own inventory, alongside the lighter fashion weights, so there is usually a wide choice of colour and mill here.
