What rigid denim is
Rigid denim is 100% cotton with no elastane. It does not give when you pull it, and it does not recover — it moulds to the wearer instead. That is the whole point of it, and it is why raw and selvedge programmes are almost always rigid.
Rigid denim shrinks. Unless the goods are marked preshrunk or sanforized, expect movement on the first wash, and build that into the pattern rather than discovering it in production.
What it is used for
Classic five-pocket jeans, trucker and chore jackets, workwear, and anything meant to fade with wear. Heavier rigid constructions from 13oz up are the traditional heritage weights. If you need a fitted leg that moves, look at stretch denim.
What to check before you commit
Whether it is sanforized, the shrinkage allowance, and the twill direction — right-hand, left-hand or broken twill all wear and fade differently. Ask for a swatch large enough to wash if shrinkage matters to your costing.
