What workwear asks of a fabric

Abrasion resistance, tear strength and dimensional stability — in that order. Weight helps all three, which is why workwear sits at 12oz and up, and often well above. Bull denim, a heavier three-by-one twill, is the traditional answer where a piece needs to take real wear without the indigo character of a jean fabric.

Rigid, and usually undyed or piece-dyed

Workwear is almost always rigid. Elastane degrades with abrasion and industrial laundering, so it has no place in a garment meant to last. Natural, ecru and piece-dyed goods are common where the look is utility rather than denim.
