Short answer
Under 9oz drapes and belongs on shirts and dresses. Over 13oz stands up and belongs on jeans, jackets and workwear. Choosing by silhouette gets you there faster than choosing by number.

Shirting, shirt dresses, summer skirts, linings and lighter workwear. Not a jean weight — a five-pocket in 7oz will not hold its shape.
Choose Heavyweight (13oz+) when…
Anything sold on durability or on how it will fade. Allow for the bulk at seam intersections and the longer break-in.
