What counts as lightweight

Anything under about 9oz. At that weight denim stops behaving like denim and starts behaving like a shirting: it drapes rather than stands, it takes a gather, and it sews fast. Between 6 and 8oz is the classic chambray and denim-shirt range; below 6oz you are into true shirtings.

This is the deepest band in our inventory — more yardage sits here than in any other weight class — so it is usually where the widest choice of colour and construction is.

What it is used for

Denim shirts and overshirts, shirt dresses, summer skirts, linings and lighter workwear. It is not a jean weight: a five-pocket cut in 7oz will not hold its shape at the seat or the knee. For jeans, start at 10oz and go up.

Lightweight twill sits here too

A good part of this band is twill rather than indigo denim — useful for shirting, linings and lighter workwear where you want the diagonal without the weight or the indigo. It is listed alongside the denim below; check the description on each row.

What to watch

Lightweight fabric shows every fault in the make, so the sewing has to be cleaner than it does at 12oz. Check opacity if the garment is unlined — a 6oz indigo can be more transparent than the shade suggests. And check shrinkage: lighter constructions often move more, not less.
