Why 98/2 is the default

Two percent elastane is enough to let a fitted leg move without changing what the fabric is. It still reads and wears as denim, still takes a wash, and still holds a crease — it just stops fighting the wearer when they sit down. That balance is why most fitted and skinny programmes are cut in it.

Spandex, elastane and Lycra are the same fibre under different names. Our sheets write it as S or E depending on the mill, so a row reading 98%C 2%S and one reading 98%C 2%E are the same construction.

Against 99/1 and 97/3

At 1% you get comfort without a change in silhouette — better for a straight leg. At 3% and above the fit gets genuinely close and the pattern has to account for it. 98/2 is the middle, which is why it is the volume construction.

Read the whole composition though. A 98/2 that is cotton and elastane behaves differently from one carrying polyester as well, in recovery and in how it takes a wash.

What to check

Recovery first: stretch it, hold, release, and see whether it returns. Then whether the stretch is weft-only or bi-stretch. Then wash a piece if the programme includes one.
