First Quality vs Second Quality Denim

There is no industry-wide standard

This is the first thing to understand: first, second and third quality are not defined by any external body. Each mill grades against its own tolerance, so one mill's seconds can be cleaner than another's firsts. The grade tells you how the fabric compares to what that mill intended, not how it compares to the market.

That is why the grade is a starting point for a conversation, not a specification. Ask what the fault actually is.

What usually puts a roll into seconds

Most commonly: a shade variation between or within rolls, a weaving fault such as a missing pick or a slub where none was intended, an oil or contamination mark, uneven finish, or width running outside tolerance. Any one of those can be irrelevant or fatal depending on what you are cutting.

A shade variation is serious if you are cutting a matched set and trivial if the programme is garment-dyed afterwards. A fault every forty yards costs you almost nothing on a small run and a great deal on a long marker.

When seconds are the right buy

When the price difference is real, the fault is one you can cut around, and you are not matching across panels. Sampling yardage, garment-dyed programmes, heavily washed finishes, linings and internal panels all absorb minor faults well.

When to avoid them: matched sets, pale or unwashed finishes where every mark shows, and long markers where a repeating fault multiplies.

What to ask before you buy

What is the fault, how often does it repeat, is it edge or full-width, and is the yardage on the roll usable or does it include the faulty section. Ask for a swatch from the affected area rather than a clean one — a good supplier will send it.
