98/2 vs 99/1 Stretch Denim
One percent of elastane is the difference between comfort and fit. Here is which you need.
Short answer
Use 99/1 when you want rigid character with some give. Use 98/2 when the fit is genuinely close. The percentage changes the silhouette, not just the comfort.
Side by side
| 98/2 | 99/1 | |
|---|---|---|
| Elastane | 2% | 1% |
| Hand | Noticeably softer | Close to rigid |
| Silhouette | Changes it — allows a close fit | Preserves a rigid look |
| Best fits | Skinny, fitted, tapered | Straight, slim-straight |
| Recovery demand | Higher — test it | Lower |
| Pattern | Needs stretch allowances | Close to a rigid block |
Choose 98/2 when…
Fitted and skinny legs, stretch skirts and shorts, anything where the customer expects the garment to move with them.
Choose 99/1 when…
A straight or slim-straight leg that should look and photograph like raw denim but still be wearable all day. Also the safer choice if you are adapting a rigid pattern.
