How to Source Denim for a Clothing Brand

1. Start from the garment, not the fabric

Decide the silhouette and how it should hang before you look at a single swatch. Fit drives construction: a close leg needs stretch, a straight or relaxed leg is better rigid. Drape drives weight. Get those two decisions made and you have narrowed thousands of fabrics to a shortlist.

2. Pick a weight band, not a number

Work in bands rather than chasing an exact ounce figure. Under 9oz for shirts and dresses, 9–11oz for fashion jeans, 12–14oz for traditional jeans and jackets, 14oz and up for heritage and workwear. See the weight guide for what changes across the bands.

3. Get swatches and handle them

Two fabrics at the same weight and composition can feel completely different. Order swatches from more than one candidate and handle them together. If your programme includes a wash, wash a piece — the fabric you approve dry is not the fabric the customer receives.

4. Check width before you compare prices

Width drives yield, and yield drives cost per garment. A cheaper fabric on a narrower roll can cost more per unit. Work the marker at each candidate width before deciding anything on price per yard.

5. Confirm yardage and hold it

Stock moves. When you have chosen, confirm the yardage on the roll and have it held. This is where buying from stock differs from a mill order: what you are confirming already exists, so the answer is immediate rather than a production slot.

6. Plan the second order now

The hardest part of stock buying is repeatability. If the programme will repeat, ask at the outset how much of that fabric exists, and buy the full quantity rather than assuming it will be there next season. Where repeatability matters more than lead time, that is the case for a mill order instead.
