Japanese vs American Selvedge

Japanese vs American Selvedge

Both are shuttle-loom denim. The difference is in yarn character and what the market expects from each.

Short answer

Japanese selvedge is usually chosen for irregular, textured yarn and a deep indigo. American selvedge — Cone above all — is chosen for a cleaner, more even classic character and a workwear lineage.
